WhatsApp Coexistence and Linked Devices: What Connecting a Chatbot Does to WhatsApp Web and Your Other Phones

The short answer

When you connect a chatbot or inbox tool to your WhatsApp Business number through coexistence, WhatsApp signs out every linked device: WhatsApp Web, the desktop app, tablets and the other phones on your account. Your main phone stays signed in and keeps every chat. Afterwards you link the other devices again by scanning the QR code, as you did the first time. Two kinds of device cannot come back: WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS watches. A few features also switch off on the number, such as disappearing messages and broadcast lists. Everything below is from Meta's own documentation as it read on 5 October 2026.

Turning on Meta's own AI, Meta Business Agent, signs out linked devices too. Both are documented, but owners often find out from a staff member whose WhatsApp Web has suddenly logged out.

What coexistence is

Coexistence is Meta's way of running the WhatsApp Business app and an outside platform on the same number at once. Your staff keep answering from the app on their phones, and a chatbot, AI assistant or shared inbox connected through Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform reads and sends messages on the same number. Before coexistence, connecting a tool usually meant moving the number off the app for good. Many of the WhatsApp tools small businesses compare, including respond.io, SleekFlow and Wati, now offer it.

What happens to your linked devices

Meta's developer documentation is explicit: "Once a business customer onboards to Cloud API with an existing WhatsApp Business app account and number, all companion apps will be unlinked from the account, and the business can then re-link any supported companion apps" (Meta for Developers, read 5 October 2026).

In plain terms:

  • Your main phone stays connected, with your chats and contacts.
  • WhatsApp Web, the Mac app, other phones and Android tablets are signed out once. Link them again from the main phone.
  • WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS are not supported with coexistence, so they cannot be linked again. Use WhatsApp Web or the Mac app on a computer instead.
  • You can link up to four devices, as before.

Disconnecting the tool later unlinks them again. respond.io's help centre says "all companion devices will be automatically unlinked when onboarding to or offboarding from" coexistence (respond.io help centre, "WhatsApp Business App Quick Start (WhatsApp Coexistence)", read 5 October 2026).

How to link them again

From the main phone (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026):

  1. Open WhatsApp Business.
  2. On Android, tap the three dots, then Linked devices > Link a device. On iPhone, tap Settings, then Linked devices > Link device.
  3. Confirm with your fingerprint, face or phone PIN if asked.
  4. Scan the QR code shown on the computer or tablet.

Tell staff before you connect, so a logged-out WhatsApp Web mid-shift is expected rather than alarming.

Other things that change on the number

Meta lists what changes in the WhatsApp Business app once coexistence is on:

Feature What happens
Disappearing messages Turned off for one-to-one chats
View once messages Disabled for one-to-one chats
Live location Disabled for one-to-one chats
Broadcast lists Disabled; existing lists become read-only
Group chats Keep working in the app, but are not passed to the connected tool
Voice and video calls Unchanged; they stay on the phone
Catalogue, labels, quick replies, away messages Unchanged in the app

Keeping the connection alive

Open WhatsApp Business on the main phone regularly. WhatsApp's Help Center says you need to log in on the primary phone every 14 days to keep linked devices connected, and Meta's developer documentation lists "primary device inactive for approximately 14 days" among the reasons a coexistence connection is cut. A linked device left unused for about 30 days is disconnected too. If the phone that holds the number lives in a drawer, the connection can lapse without anyone noticing; our guide to checking a WhatsApp chatbot is still answering covers what to watch.

Meta Business Agent does the same

Owners meet this first with Meta's own AI. "As soon as I turned on Meta Business Agent my linked devices got logged out... I'll have to do without it" (Google Play, August 2026, translated). Another wrote that turning it on unlinked all their employees' phones (YouTube, April 2026, translated). Of the 180 complaints about Meta's business AI we read on 27 September 2026, 23 were about it breaking something in the app, from signed-out devices to slowdowns. We searched for complaints, so that count shows what unhappy owners raise, not how many owners are affected.

Meta's Help Center confirms the device part: "Turning on Meta Business Agent will disconnect any existing linked devices." Most can be linked again; WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets and WearOS cannot (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026). More on that in the Meta Business Agent problems owners report.

Our own setup does this too

Conciergr connects to your number through coexistence, so connecting it signs WhatsApp Web and your other linked devices out once, exactly as described above. We say so on the signup page and again in the setup instructions, with the steps to link them again. Your main phone and your chats are not affected, and your team keeps answering in the WhatsApp Business app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did WhatsApp Web log out when we connected a chatbot?

Connecting a tool to a WhatsApp Business app number through coexistence unlinks every companion device by design, according to Meta's documentation. Link WhatsApp Web again by scanning the QR code from the main phone.

Can I use WhatsApp for Windows with coexistence?

No. Meta lists WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS as unsupported companion apps. Use WhatsApp Web or the Mac app on a computer instead.

Do I lose my chats when I connect?

No. Your main phone keeps its chats and contacts. If you agree during setup, the connected tool also receives the last six months of one-to-one chats.

Will disconnecting the chatbot log out my devices again?

Yes. Disconnecting from coexistence unlinks companion devices again, so link them once more afterwards.

Does Meta Business Agent log out linked devices?

Yes. Meta's Help Center says turning it on disconnects existing linked devices. Most can be linked again afterwards, except WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets and WearOS.
