WhatsApp Business AI Not Working? The Meta Business Agent Problems Owners Report, and What to Do

The short answer

Meta Business Agent (formerly Business AI) is the free AI assistant inside the WhatsApp Business app. Owners who use it report six recurring problems: it goes quiet or hands every chat back to them, it quotes wrong prices, it answers chats they wanted left alone, its free allowance runs out, turning it on signs out WhatsApp Web and other linked devices, and some businesses cannot get it at all. Most of these have a setting or a workaround on Meta's side, listed below with Meta's own wording as of 5 October 2026. Two do not: there is no setting that guarantees a correct price, and Meta keeps using chats where the agent is connected to improve its AI, even while it is paused.

Where these problems come from

On 27 September 2026 we read 180 public complaints about Meta's business AI: Google Play and App Store reviews, Reddit threads and comments under YouTube setup tutorials, dated mostly April to September 2026. 139 of them (77%) were not in English, mostly Portuguese or Spanish, because the agent reached Brazil and Latin America first; those quotes below are our translations and are marked. We searched for complaints, so the sample leans negative on purpose: the counts show which problems come up most often, not how many owners are unhappy. Some owners report good results with it; we did not count those.

Problem Complaints (of 180 we read) What Meta offers today
Goes quiet or hands every chat back 35 Per-chat controls; a handoff list
Not available to the business 31 Waitlist; some sectors excluded
Answers chats the owner wanted left alone 25 Reply settings; remove from one chat
Linked devices sign out, features switch off 23 Re-link most devices after setup
Ignores the owner's instructions 17 Teaching and feedback
States wrong facts or prices 17 A warning that replies may be inaccurate
Free use stops at a monthly limit 13 Meta One plans, or wait for the reset

One complaint can carry two problems, so the counts add up to more than 180.

It goes quiet, or hands every chat back to you

This is the most common complaint. "The agent answers no customers; messages arrive and it just transfers them" (Google Play, August 2026, translated). Another owner lost a setup after an update: "the AI agent disappeared and I can't activate it, it errors... I lost everything because it was already well trained" (App Store, September 2026, translated).

Meta's Help Center explains some of the silence. When the agent does not have enough information it goes into learning mode and collects data from new chats before it starts replying. Replying to a customer yourself pauses it in that chat "until you unmute it" (WhatsApp Help Center). If you switch it on in a chat where you are mid-conversation, it will not answer that customer until the chat has been inactive for seven days, unless you tap Restart AI replies in this chat (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026).

What to check: look for the sparkle icon on a chat (no icon means the agent is not in that chat), check Tools > Your AI agent > AI replies, and open AI handoff on the Chats tab, where the chats it has passed back to you collect.

It quotes wrong prices or ignores your rules

"I saw the same product come back at two different prices in two replies. If you don't ground it properly, it just makes things up" (Reddit, July 2026). Another owner stopped it sending prices at all: "sometimes it quoted well above normal and I lost some customers. Now I don't let it send prices" (YouTube, May 2026, translated).

Meta says so plainly on its own page: "AI-generated messages may not be accurate or appropriate" (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026). The agent learns from your catalogue, website, uploaded documents and, if you allow it, six months of past chats, and you can correct it through teaching and feedback. If prices matter, test it on every price question before you let it reply, and repeat the test whenever your prices change.

It answers chats you wanted left alone

"I can't stop it from send messages even to those I don't want to reply to" (Google Play, May 2026). Other owners describe it replying to competitors and to personal contacts.

Meta now offers four reply settings, including 1-1 chats except with contacts, which keeps it out of chats with anyone saved in your phone, and a per-chat Remove AI switch. The step-by-step is in our guide to turning off WhatsApp Business AI for some chats or all of them.

The free allowance runs out

"I was surprised when use was cut off by a monthly limit that had never been disclosed" (Google Play, August 2026, translated).

Meta's wording today is that the agent "is free to use each month up to an included allowance, with more responses available through Meta One plans" (WhatsApp Business, read 5 October 2026). Meta does not publish the size of the allowance. At the limit you can "subscribe to a Meta One plan ... or wait for your free limit to refresh" (WhatsApp Help Center). The business plans announced in September 2026 start at $14.99 a month (Essential), then $49.99 (Advanced), $149 (Expert) and $499 (Max), each with more use of the agent than the free allowance (Meta, September 2026). Meta's Help Center says Meta One is still in limited testing and not available everywhere.

Linked devices sign out, and some features switch off

"As soon as I turned on Meta Business Agent my linked devices got logged out... I'll have to do without it" (Google Play, August 2026, translated).

This is documented behaviour. Meta's Help Center: "Turning on Meta Business Agent will disconnect any existing linked devices." You can re-link most of them after setup, except WhatsApp for Windows, WhatsApp for Android tablets and WhatsApp for WearOS. The same page warns that the agent "may impede your ability to use certain features", including broadcast lists, disappearing messages and greeting and away messages, which come back if you delete it (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026). Third-party WhatsApp assistants that connect through coexistence sign out linked devices too; we explain the difference in what connecting a chatbot does to WhatsApp Web and your linked phones.

Some businesses cannot use it

Meta's Help Center says the agent is "currently only available in limited countries to select businesses", with a waitlist for the rest.

Some sectors are shut out. For businesses using the agent through Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta's developer documentation says "all verticals are supported except Finance, Government, Health, Alcohol, Gambling, over-the-counter drugs, and matrimony services" (Meta for Developers, read 5 October 2026). Meta's Help Center does not publish a sector list for the app version, but owners report the same wall: "I have a client that's a medical clinic, and Meta Business Agent isn't allowed for that niche" (YouTube, September 2026, translated).

What Meta does with the chats

Meta's Help Center is direct about this: "Messages sent or received in chats that have connected Meta Business Agent will still be collected by Meta to improve AI at Meta, even when you mute Meta Business Agent. When you delete Meta Business Agent, you will no longer be sharing your messages with Meta to improve AI at Meta" (WhatsApp Help Center, read 5 October 2026). Customers see a notice that AI from Meta receives the chats. If that matters for your customers, pausing is not enough; deleting is.

When to keep it, and when to move on

Keep Meta's agent if it is available to you, your questions are simple, a wrong price would not cost you much, and you are happy with how Meta uses the chats. It costs nothing up to the allowance and lives inside the app you already use.

Look at a third-party assistant if you need answers held to documents you control, if your sector is excluded, or if you do not want customer chats used to improve Meta's AI. Our comparison of Meta Business AI and a WhatsApp chatbot covers the trade-offs, and Conciergr is one such assistant: it answers from a Google Doc and Sheet you keep, and your team carries on in the WhatsApp Business app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is WhatsApp Business AI not replying to my customers?

The most common reasons on Meta's side are learning mode (it is still collecting chats before it replies), a manual reply from you (which pauses it in that chat until you unmute it), switching it on mid-conversation (it waits until the chat has been quiet for seven days), or the free monthly allowance running out. Check the sparkle icon on the chat, your AI replies setting and the AI handoff list.

Is Meta Business Agent free?

Up to a monthly allowance that Meta does not publish. After that, Meta says you can subscribe to a Meta One plan or wait for the allowance to refresh. Business plans announced in September 2026 start at $14.99 a month.

Does WhatsApp Business AI log out WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Meta's Help Center says turning it on disconnects existing linked devices. Most can be linked again afterwards, but not WhatsApp for Windows, Android tablets or WearOS.

Can a clinic or a financial adviser use Meta Business Agent?

Probably not. For the version run through Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta's developer documentation excludes finance, government, health, alcohol, gambling, over-the-counter drugs and matrimony services (5 October 2026). Meta publishes no sector list for the app version, but owners of clinics report being refused.

Can I stop it answering my personal contacts?

Yes. Under AI replies, choose 1-1 chats except with contacts, or remove the agent from individual chats. Our step-by-step guide has the menu paths.
