How to Turn Off WhatsApp Business AI (Meta Business Agent) for One Chat or All of Them
The short answer
Meta Business Agent, the AI in the WhatsApp Business app that used to be called Business AI, can be switched off at four levels: in one chat, for everyone saved in your contacts, for all new chats (pause), or completely (delete). Every step below is from WhatsApp's Help Center as it read on 5 October 2026. Meta says the feature is only available in some countries, so menu names can differ slightly on your phone.
Stop it in one chat
To take over a single conversation, open the chat and tap Respond manually. Replying yourself has the same effect: Meta says a manual reply pauses the agent in that chat "until you unmute it".
To keep it out of a chat for good, remove it from that chat (WhatsApp Help Center):
- Open the chat.
- Tap the name of the contact or group.
- Tap Include your AI > Remove AI.
Meta says this stops the agent replying in that chat and stops it learning from your replies there. To bring it back, follow the same path and tap Enable AI. A chat without the sparkle icon is one the agent is not in.
Keep it away from your contacts
If the problem is the agent answering friends, suppliers or other businesses, change who it replies to. Go to Tools > Your AI agent > AI replies and pick one of Meta's four options (WhatsApp Help Center):
- All new 1-1 chats: it answers every new one-to-one chat.
- 1-1 chats except with contacts: it stays out of chats with anyone saved in your contacts.
- 1-1 chats from ads: it answers only chats that start from your Facebook or Instagram ads.
- Paused for new chats but learning: it answers nobody new but keeps learning from new chats.
For most owners, 1-1 chats except with contacts fixes the "it replied to my supplier" problem without switching the agent off.
Pause it for everyone
Pausing stops it answering new chats while keeping your setup (WhatsApp Help Center):
- Tap Tools > Meta Business Agent > Response settings.
- On Android, tap Disconnect AI. On iPhone, the button is Delete your AI agent.
- Tap Pause AI replies.
Pausing does not stop Meta using the chats. Meta's Help Center says messages in chats where the agent is connected "will still be collected by Meta to improve AI at Meta, even when you mute Meta Business Agent" (WhatsApp Help Center).
Delete it completely
- Tap Tools > Meta Business Agent.
- Tap Response settings > Disconnect AI > Disconnect and delete my AI (on iPhone: Delete your AI agent > Disconnect and delete my AI).
- Fill in Meta's short survey.
- Tap Submit.
Deleting is the only option that stops the chats being shared with Meta to improve its AI, according to the same Help Center page. It also gives back the features the agent switches off, including greeting and away messages. If you turn it on again later, you go through the setup from the beginning and teach it again.
This is not the same as Meta AI
Meta Business Agent answers your customers for you, and is what this guide switches off. Meta AI is a different feature: the assistant you chat with yourself, opened from the Chats tab, which Meta describes as "an optional service" (WhatsApp Help Center). They have separate Help Center articles and separate settings, so the steps above do not change Meta AI.
What to use instead
Most owners who turn the agent off want one of three things.
A simple out-of-hours message. Delete the agent, then set up a greeting or away message in Business tools. Meta's Help Center says both are disabled while the agent is connected (WhatsApp Help Center).
Nothing automated. Delete the agent and answer by hand, as before.
An assistant you control. A third-party WhatsApp assistant connects to the same number through Meta's coexistence setup, so your team keeps the WhatsApp Business app on their phones. Meta's agent has to be disconnected first: if the connection step says "Business AI agent is already linked", disconnect the AI in the app and connect again. Connecting signs WhatsApp Web and other linked devices out once; here is what that means for your phones.
If you are weighing that last option, our comparison of Meta Business AI and a third-party WhatsApp chatbot covers the trade-offs, and Conciergr is one such assistant: it answers only from a Google Doc and Sheet you keep, and it steps back for 10 minutes in any chat a staff member replies in. For the reasons owners switch the agent off in the first place, see the Meta Business Agent problems owners report.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop WhatsApp Business AI replying to one customer?
Open the chat, tap the contact's name, then tap Include your AI and Remove AI. To take over just for now, tap Respond manually or reply yourself, which pauses it in that chat until you unmute it.
Can I turn off Meta Business Agent without deleting it?
Yes. Go to Tools, Meta Business Agent, Response settings, Disconnect AI (Delete your AI agent on iPhone), then Pause AI replies. It stops answering new chats and keeps your setup. Meta still collects the chats where it is connected to improve its AI.
Why did my away message stop working?
Meta's Help Center says greeting and away messages are disabled while Meta Business Agent is connected. Delete the agent to use them again.
Does turning off Business AI remove Meta AI from WhatsApp?
No. They are separate features with separate settings. The business agent answers your customers; Meta AI is the assistant you chat with yourself from the Chats tab.
Conciergr answers your enquiries in seconds, around the clock, from documents you own — and your team keeps using WhatsApp exactly as before.
